Adventure across the city with Chicago Explorers or innovate at NNM with One-Week Specialty Camps! All camps are for students entering grades 1-4 in the fall. Children who attend schools outside of NNM are invited to join the fun. Check out Extended Day options for camp 7:30am-5:30pm.


Chicago Explorers (ages 6-10, entering grades 1-4)

Grab your walking shoes and hop aboard the CTA for five days of high-energy fun! Splash at the beach, sample foods from around the world and learn about the history of our vibrant city with Chicago Explorers. Developed and led by NNM faculty, Chicago Explorers fosters independence, confidence and a sense of awe about the city around us. Campers use public transit, with lots of walking each day. All camps are for children entering grades 1-4 in the fall and run Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Children who attend schools outside of NNM are encouraged to join the fun! Children swim in our indoor pool on days when the travel schedule allows.

Chicago Explorers: Science
Week 1: June 18–22

Mix, measure, tinker, create! Experience science throughout the city in this exciting Chicago Explorers camp. Every day features new adventures, from creating and printing 3D design at the Museum of Science & Industry to learning what the life of a zoologist is like at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Work your way through a variety of projects in the physical and natural sciences, with opportunities for art, active movement and collaboration along the way.

Chicago Explorers: Architecture
Week 1: June 18–22

Come investigate Chicago’s world-famous architecture on a whirlwind tour of the city! From the view of a double-decker bus downtown to a boat excursion on the Chicago River, Campers observe the city from new angles and heights. They will also visit hidden gems in quieter neighborhoods to get the full picture of a city that made its mark with innovation and beauty.

Chicago Explorers: The Great Chicago (5 Senses) Hunt
Week 1: June 18–22

Put on your thinking caps for a challenging and engaging day in the city! With the guidance of Marcela, Campers will set off on a scavenger hunt, finding clues that lead them closer and closer to the destination: unique events, neighborhoods, shops and restaurants. Each day of camp will require campers to really tap into one of their five senses in order to solve the scavenger hunt. Throughout the hunt, Explorers will investigate food, art, nature, music and more along the way.

Get ready to explore the delicious side of Chicago, on a tasty tour of the city’s unique and exciting flavors! From pizza and pierogies to dumplings and dim sum, Foodies will have the chance to taste new flavors and expand their palates. Restaurants and outdoor picnics are just the beginning as campers join Jesse to see and taste what Chicago neighborhoods have to offer!

Chicago Explorers: Arts
Week 2: June 25–29

Grab your sketchbook and get ready to explore art around Chicago! Campers will discover Chicago’s artistic beauty with visits to places like the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Farmers’ Market, and the Art Institute. Campers will also have the opportunity to document their experiences around the city with drawings, photographs, and sand art. Get excited for this fun-filled week of art exploration!

Chicago Explorers: Active
Week 3: July 2–6 (closed July 4)

Move, jump, run! From visiting a landmark sports arena to practicing action stunts with a professional circus performer, Campers join for five days of high-energy fun and adventure. Campers will also enjoy inventing their own games and venturing to our city’s parks to try them out! Jesse returns to classic sites and explores new ways to stay active in our bustling city.

Chicago Explorers: Math in Art and Nature
Week 3: July 2–6 (closed July 4)

Math-minded Explorers and Art Enthusiasts alike will go nuts for this adventure through the city. Campers will visit different sites, observing the natural mathematical elements in nature and that result from nature, as well as through both conventional and organic art. Explorers will each have a sketchbook to draw and write their perceptions at each stop, observing their city through a mathematical lens.

Chicago Explorers: Nature
Week 4: July 9–13

Discover the flora and fauna of our beautiful city, from the Morton Arboretum in the west to Northerly Island in the east. There’s no limit to the variety of landscapes campers will experience, as we investigate everything from an urban nature preserve to a vibrant beach. Explorers will enjoy fun and games in the sun and learn about the science of nature too!

Chicago Explorers: Neighborhoods & Cultures
Week 4: July 9–13

Chicago neighborhoods are rich with culture and personality, and Explorers will take the week to really get to know a few favorites! From Pilsen to Wrigleyville, campers will try food at local hot spots, check out murals and nature, and investigate sites of cultural significance. Campers will also learn about the history of each neighborhood visited and how it contributes to Chicago as a whole.

Chicago Explorers: Mapquesters
Week 5: July 16–20

Join Kyle on a quest through the city! Through reading maps and using coordinates and compasses to get them to and from their destinations, campers will venture to fun locations around the city. Campers will use their experience and observations to make their own maps towards the end of the week!

Chicago Explorers: Chicago Med
Week 6: July 23–27

Ever wondered what it’s like to work in the ER? Excited by all things medical? Led by NNM Nurse Elise, Explorers will love the opportunity to investigate the exciting interiors of Chicago’s medical side. With adventures to the Emergency Room, Fire Station, Museum of Science and Industry, and more, campers will learn what goes on behind the scenes of the medical world. Not just for future doctors and nurses, this camp will let curious minds learn the ins-and-outs of all things related to health and wellness.

Chicago Explorers: Beaches

Sun, sand, and smiles are the key ingredients to Explorers hitting the beaches! Campers will love spending time with both old and new friends at one of Chicago’s many incredible beaches. Each day is an adventure, as campers load up on sunscreen and games for a fun day at five unique beaches.

One-Week Specialty Camps (ages 6-10, entering grades 1-4)

Full STEAM ahead! Developed and led by NNM faculty, One-Week Specialty Camps are unique opportunities to dive deep into a particular interest. From theater to technology to engineering to art, One-Week Specialty Camps foster innovative thinking and creative problem-solving, all in an environment of collaborative fun. All camps feature five days of unique curriculum 9am-3pm and are for children entering grades 1-4 in the fall. Children who attend schools outside of NNM are invited to join the fun! Children swim in our indoor pool on days when the time allows.

Campers will also learn how farm-fresh foods are a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle, and how to incorporate them into everyday meals.

Ooey Gooey Science

Graphic Design
Week 4: July 9-13

At Graphic Design Camp, students will learn the foundations of powerful design and gain the technical skills to create digital vector artwork in Adobe Illustrator. After learning the basics of graphic design, campers will draft original artwork and design their own logos. For their final project, students will make their own movie poster.

Join Janeen for five full days of fun learning the art of stop-motion animation. Create, script, storyboard and animate characters from the world around us to build a story, just like in the movies.
